We chatted with Emily Hochman, Founder & CEO of Wellory. Emily shares how she keeps her mornings sacred while balancing what the day has in store running her company. Read on to learn more about her passions for using food as medicine, her own health diagnoses as the inspiration behind Wellory, and how she hopes to listen to and educate her community around the power of food and the body. 


Where do you live?

I live in the West Village, in New York.


Do you have any wellness rituals? How does your day typically begin?

Yes! There are a few wellness rituals in the morning that are non-negotiables for me. First thing’s first, I start every day with a cup of hot water and lemon, followed by avocado toast and then matcha tea. It doesn’t matter where I am or the day of the week, that’s always my morning ritual and my very favorite wellness routine.


What are your current self-care routines and how do you nourish yourself? 

I am currently loving my morning gua sha (I always gua sha right after the shower and before I put my makeup on) and my nighttime skincare routine. I never go to bed without my 6+ step process.


What’s your most sacred time of day? 

I have two: 7am on my computer before most people are online or 10pm at night when most people have signed off for the day. I love taking some quiet time to catch up on industry news, digest my day, or plan ahead.


What’s your superpower?

Networking! I am a huge people person and love meeting new people and making connections.


What inspired you to launch Wellory?

Wellory came from personal experience. I was diagnosed with a chronic illness and refused to take medication. I found nutrition as my cure and then became obsessed with the power of food as medicine. When I told friends and family, everyone had their own story and questions but no one knew where to turn. Going against the diet-culture status quo, how did you cultivate conversation and education around your food-as-medicine philosophy? What is the most common diet myth that you hear?

At Wellory, feedback and transparency are key pillars of our success. We are always asking our customers and our community what’s working best for them, what their pain points are, what gaps we can fill and how they’re feeling. We take this feedback very seriously and translate it into product, marketing, and operations. We share our philosophy with our community through our network of over 1,000 nutrition experts, our social media channels, our monthly newsletter, and through thoughtful, mission-aligned brand partnerships, 


The most common diet we hear about is uneducated fasting. It can be seriously damaging to your body!



Wellory sees food as medicine. What was your personal journey using food as medicine to heal your mind and body?

I was diagnosed with PCOS, hypothyroidism, and at risk of diabetes at the age of 22. By drastically changing my diet, I was able to cure myself of every chronic illness. Food really does matter!



What has been the most challenging part about building a community and platform that rewires our relationship with food? The most rewarding?

One of the most challenging parts is around educating the community as to the power food can really play in our lives. Food education is not often taught in childhood development, often left out of our conversations and mostly ignored. Yet, it plays one of the most important roles in our overall health. So the challenge becomes education. Although nutrition isn’t rocket science, it is complex and can impact everyone differently. At Wellory, we’re solving for personalization through in-app content and human expertise. 


The most rewarding part of what we’re building at Wellory is without a doubt the impact that we make with our customers. We get emails and reviews all the time that tell us how much we’ve changed someone’s life, helped someone lose weight, helped someone regain confidence, or even have control over their day. It’s our happy customers that make even the hardest days worth it.


What is something special happening in your life right now that you’d be excited to share with our community?

We just moved into our very own Wellory office – see it here! Being back together with the team has been so special. The energy is contagious and the collaboration is unbeatable.
