Turkey Bone Broth: The Best Kept Secret for Thanksgiving Leftovers

This Thanksgiving is the perfect year to create new traditions, practice self-care, and try out a new recipe for Thanksgiving leftovers: turkey bone broth. This zero-waste, fool-proof, nutritional liquid gold will change your Thanksgiving leftovers game for years to come.

Bone broth is having a major moment. But the tradition of making bone broth has been passed down for generations among different cultures—it’s a way to avoid waste of animal parts (we’re talking leftover innards, foot bones, etc.) In Chinese medicine, bone broth has been used as a treatment to promote healthy kidney functioning and digestion. 

So what is bone broth, exactly? Well, it’s broth made out of bones, and it’s almost as simple as that. Bone broth can be prepared using parts from beef, chicken, turkey, pork, fish, or a mixture of them all. You can also include veggies and herbs to enhance the flavor and add extra vitamins. The key is to simmer it long enough to become a nutrition-packed flavor bomb that’s high in calcium, magnesium, collagen, and potassium (it’s no surprise that bone broth has become a staple in the beauty and fitness communities!). Enjoy it as a tea or coffee substitute; dress it up with mushrooms and tofu for a warming lunch; or have it as a snack throughout the day. 

Don’t be fooled by the 10 hour simmer-time—bone broth is actually wildly easy to make and a chance to get creative in the kitchen. Throw in different herbs, seasonings, and feel free to omit anything below to make it your own.

Prep time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 10 hours

  • 1 whole turkey carcass
  • Water, enough needed to cover ingredients, roughly 15 cups
  • 2 onions, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 2 carrots, roughly chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Orange peel
  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • 4 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 4 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons black peppercorn

Bring ingredients to a boil. Reduce heat to a low simmer. Skim fat layer off the top occasionally for the first hour or so. Let simmer for 10 hours minimum. Cool and strain; store in the fridge for up to a week. Enjoy your bone broth daily, or even a couple times a day.
