Everyone interested in personal health and wellness seems to be talking about balance; how to live a more balanced life, how to balance priorities, how to balance healthy relationships…the list goes on. So, what about chakra balancing?
This ever-elusive concept of balance isn’t something that just happens by saying it, it takes a lot of inner work and inner dialogue. Before we get into chakra balancing and what it might be able to do for you, let’s first understand balance.
What Does Balance Really Mean?
Here’s where it gets a bit sticky–balance can mean something different to everyone, which is kind of great, right? There is no one-size-fits-all definition for it because balance looks different and can evolve over time.
This is where that inner work begins. To find your meaning of balance, you first need to identify where you’re feeling unbalanced in your life. Are you giving more than you get in relationships? Are you finding enough time for yourself to rest? Are you nourishing your body? Are you able to disconnect from work? Ask yourself these kinds of questions to help pinpoint imbalances and thus, identify these areas of growth.
Once you have more clarity around these imbalances, think about what balance would mean for you in those situations. Whether it’s carving out more time for yourself or setting more distinct boundaries at work and with friends or family. Now look at where you are, where you want to be, and consider how to get there. This can be having conversations with people in your life to help define these boundaries (oftentimes easier said than done), creating boundaries for yourself–this could even be blocking your calendar for me-time or shutting down your laptop for the day.
While maintaining balance in your life takes a bit of work, remember to check in with yourself periodically as your life changes and shifts directions. What was once a balanced state might not be the same in 6 months, so these check-ins are really important!
Ok, I Understand Balance Now. Tell Me About the Chakras
There are 7 main chakras along your spine that make up the energy centers in your body. Let’s take a look:
Root Chakra: At the base of your spine, it is the foundation for life–it informs your sense of stability.
Sacral Chakra: Below your belly button, this is where your creative and sexual energy lies and is tied to your emotions.
Solar Plexus Chakra: It is found near your stomach and is responsible for feeling control in your life, as well as your sense of self-esteem.
Heart Chakra: As the name suggests is located near your heart and is connected to love and compassion.
Throat Chakra: Found in your throat, this chakra is responsible for our ability to communicate.
Third Eye Chakra: Between your eyes, this is where your intuition and imagination are housed.
Crown Chakra: At the top of your head is your spiritual connection with yourself and those around you.
Take a moment to really connect with yourself and identify these energy areas in your body. Think about their connection with your feelings, your actions, and your relationships.
How do I Keep My Chakras Balanced?
Chakra balancing has to do with the flow of energy through your chakra system. If your chakras are out of balance, or the energy flow is blocked, it might make you feel more fatigued, stressed, tired, and have less clarity in areas of your life that are informed by the major chakras (like relationships, confidence, communication). This can happen if your chakras are too low or high energy.
Chakra balancing, then, is the art of keeping your chakras open and the energy flowing. There are a few ways you can encourage this flow of balanced energy:
- Connect (or reconnect) with nature
- Visualize yourself in a healed, balanced state
- Sound healing with sound baths
- Daily meditation for clarity
- Practice yoga to connect with your body and mind
- Deep breathing exercises.
What Should I Expect From Balancing My Chakras?
Incorporating some of these techniques into your daily routine can help keep energy flowing freely through your chakras so you can feel more balanced. This balance can be in the form of feeling generally less stressed, more energized, more productive, having more clarity of your mind and feelings, and more decisive.
While chakra balancing might not be a technique for everyone, if you’re feeling emotionally, mentally, or physically blocked, it might be worth giving chakra balancing a try. And if not for chakra balancing, a little movement, breathing, and reconnecting with yourself and nature is never a bad thing!
