What is the Mind-Body Connection?

We are all human, with a mind, body, and spirit. As humans, each of these elements is interwoven and overlapping. One area informs the other, informs the other; it’s an infinite circle of feeling and being. Enter: the mind-body connection.

What was once a theory is now a concept being hypothesized and tested for validity that there is a correlation between our mental and physical health and being. While the scientific research of this mind-body connection continues to be developed, there is a clear intersection between the way we feel and our body’s physical response to such.

So let’s chat about this connection and understand what it is and how we can be more in-tune with it in our lives.

The Mind

The holder of all our thoughts, feelings, emotions, inner voice–so much of who we are exists in and starts with our mind. It is how we see and perceive the world and ourselves, it is how we feel emotion, it is how we make decisions, it determines our mood, and so much more. 

The Body

This is how we show up physically in the world, the vehicle that responds to our thoughts and feelings, that performs the actions of the decisions we make, it gets sick, it moves, it is our home and it is a complex one, at that. 

The Mind-Body Connection

It might seem simple–yes, we have a mind and a body and they work together to be the functioning (or struggling to function) human that we are. But it’s much more than that.

You might be familiar with heartache–it’s almost as if your heart physically hurts because of the sadness or hurt you feel. That is your mind and body speaking together. 

You might be stressed or overwhelmed and your body begins to feel more tired and unable to do things it once could. That is your mind and body speaking together. 

You might be experiencing gut health struggles and feeling irritable and lacking motivation. That is your body and mind speaking together.

You might be feeling anxious and suddenly your heart is racing and you’re short of breath. That is your mind and body speaking together.

Clearly, the ways in which our mind and body communicate are an endless, but incredibly important dialogue to understand. At its core, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the mind-body connection is, “the belief that the causes, development, and outcomes of a physical illness are determined from the interaction of psychological, social, and biological factors.”

Why is the Mind-Body Connection Important?

Understanding how your mind and body speak together is important to figure out how to help them speak together well or interpret what they are trying to tell you.

Sometimes your body knows something is wrong before your mind does, and vice versa. Taking time to understand how your body or mind reacts in certain situations might be able to help you be in better control and regulate these responses, or know when to seek help. 

Remember, when it comes to your health and wellbeing–in all aspects of your life–knowledge is power. Learning about your body, mind, and how they are connected gives you the tools to advocate for your health in a healthcare setting or how to take control of a situation at home (say, if you’re feeling stressed or anxious, knowing to practice breathing techniques to calm your body and mind). 

 

The mind-body connection is a part of every human’s health journey and the ability to live well each day, however, this looks different for everyone.
